Sankouin – Meals Sake Tokyo

Shōjin ryōri, vegetarian Buddhist delicacies, has a wealthy historical past within the Japanese meals tradition. Considered one of my favourite locations to attempt it’s at Sankouin temple in Koganei. The temple was based in 1934 and is in a quiet residential a part of Western Tokyo, north of Musashi Koganei Station on the Chūō line.

There may be one seating and the meal doesn’t begin till all the company have arrived. Teams are seated at separate tables in a big room with glass home windows overlooking the bamboo backyard.

It’s a stunning multi-course meal with greens and tōfu in quite a lot of types together with a signature smoked tōfu which is sort of a cheese. The present abbess and head chef, Kōshin Nishii, is the writer of shōjin ryōri cookbooks (in Japanese). She has many followers and I’ve run into the identical company on return visits.

A employees member explains every course in Japanese. Generally there’s an interpreter who will clarify the dishes in English, however she isn’t all the time there.

Reservations are required. I extremely suggest if you wish to discover Japanese vegetarian delicacies.
